Porterbrook Underpass Project – Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre
September 2025 – December 2025
Porterbrook commissioned P1 Construction to deliver works at their Long Marston site as part of the ongoing modernisation of the Rail Innovation Centre. P1 designed and constructed a multi-lane underpass valued at approximately £6 million, replacing the existing level crossing to improve access to and from the site.
Construction commenced on 8th September 2025, with the underpass required to be handed over by 21st October 2025 to provide access over the structure and facilitate the installation of track and overhead electrification.
Working in challenging weather conditions, P1 completed the bulk excavation within two weeks, moving in excess of 100,000 cubic metres of earth while carrying out extensive watermanagement operations. By 1st October, installation of the pre-cast concrete sections had begun, with the main structure completed within just five days – exactly four weeks from commencement of excavation.
Upon completion of the main structure, the team carried out backfilling and prepared the formation, including placement of the railway bottom ballast, enabling handover on programme.
P1 then progressed with the remaining wider underpass works, including drainage, attenuation systems, road construction, and associated structural elements, with the scheme brought fully into use by 20th December 2025.
Additional Works at Long Marston
P1 has delivered multiple packages of work at the Long Marston site.
In 2025, P1 was commissioned to construct a two-storey Depot Control Centre for the train test track. This included delivering a fully completed signalling IT room, required as part of Porterbrook’s commitment to maintain the wider signalling programme. Construction began on 1st August 2025, with the IT facility completed and handed over by 19th September – ensuring the programme remained on schedule.
Following the successful delivery of both the Depot Control Centre and underpass works, P1 was further commissioned to install an innovative GRP rail platform adjacent to the new facility, completed within just 20 days.
